April 4th – Where has the week gone! Today is a visit to the marketplace in Libourne. Libourne is another bastide city with the market square the center of commerce and the walls built around the town.
This town is located on the Dordogne Rivers and is regarded as the “little sister” to Bordeaux. The port became important for the Isle River Valley where goods could be boarded ships and transported out to sea.
King Edward I founded the town on the confluence of the two rivers in 1266.
The town square features the town hall. Shopping was a pleasure in this marketplace.
Fresh white asparagus – something you don’t see often in the US!
We had samples to meats and cheeses in the marketplace and then visited one of the many chocolate shops where we sampled their chocolate.
Spent a leisurely day around the boat and shopping in the marketplace. We were getting burned out with Chateau history and tasting so decided to take the day off! After a second trip shopping outside the market area, we retired to the ship and reconvened at 6:00 for a special cocktail hour and dinner!
