Leaving Bellepaca with a sleeping Lady V, we decided to drive to the Canaveral National Seashore and visit Eldora. By then V will have at least an hour’s nap. The last time I visited Eldora was in the 1990’s and it was being restored. I had come in by boat, while fishing in the lagoon, came ashore, walked up to the house and was accosted by a net of mosquitos. We turned around, ran back to the boat, dove in and pushed off from shore. This place can be brutal in the summer. However, with the stiff breezes off the water,…

Any day with Victoria is a GREAT DAY and today we took her to her first “shearing day” at our friend’s Alpaca Farm, Bellepaca, in Oak Hill.  The last time I took her down there she was less than impressed clinging to my neck while their dog ran around our feet, but we decided to try again! Bellepaca Farm The overcast skies with threat/promise of rain moderated our 90 degree temperatures and the wind was blowing about 15 kts so it wasn’t a bad day at all!  Bellepaca Farm is located about two-three miles from the ICW in Oak Hill and…

Our last day here was a beautiful one.  We decided this was a great day to take the chairlift to the top of Beech Mountain (along with all the mountain bikers!) Dave stayed at the bottom with Lady V as it would be difficult to have her riding a chairlift and decide to go postal!  Rode to the top and were not disappointed with the views! We lined up with the mountain bikers and hopped on the chairlift.  The ride up was beautiful Watching the mountain bikers coming down was great too! Once at the top, we had 360 degree…

Today was a day to go to Grandfather Mountain and we coaxed the kids out of their room to join us.  Perry & Jin were due in tonight so we set out in our 2-car caravan over to the Grandfather. Three quarters of the way up was the Welcome Center with a little zoo for rescued animals.  It was fun watching Lady V meet the animals!  Then we caravanned to the top to cross the swinging bridge! The final ascent to the top was a steep switch back with fantastic vistas!  The Mini just loves these roads.

Well kids will be kids we checked out the Buckeye Lake Recreation Area to see what activities they had for the kids.  It was quite a place with a HUGE building housing several basketball courts, ping pong and pickle ball courts as well as a padded play room for Lady V.  This is all located in a beautiful area in Beech Mountain with walking trails and a lake.  As we were leaving we spied a playground and everyone got into the act!   Everyone had a blast!  Playgrounds are like that!!!!!

Chris, Sarah and Victoria are here.  After grocery shopping we took the afternoon to explore Beech Mountain.  The house is located a mile from the ski area and we heard there was a brewery up there so that was our first stop! A ski area is always interesting in the summer and this own uses its resources for the mountain biking recreation as well as frisbee golf down the mountain.  The chair lift for $10 pp you can ride to the top and back down.  For $30/day you can ride up and down and put your mountain bike on the…

A simple little walk ended up being an endurance test of my ability to climb straight up the side of the mountain! Our rental home is on a gravel road with wonderful hiking trails.  I decided to take a trail down with Billy figuring I would come out behind the house!  Where I came out was on the road below the house and the way up to the house was a long way back by road or a steep climb hanging onto twigs, branches, wet leaves and fording a stream.  Of course Billy had no problem. By the time I…

Well, we kicked off our summer travels with a family vacation in Beech Mountain, NC.  In the past our family vacations have been held at Cascade Lake Recreation Area outside of Brevard NC with all of us crammed into our 30′ motorhome because it’s the only place with AC in the area!  This year, with Lady V now 16 months old, we thought it wise to rent a house and let everyone have their own bathrooms and a large kitchen to prepare great family meals!  Boy were we right! We rented a lovely home at Beech Mountain, North Carolina sitting…

Jin and Perry finally arrived and we set up our three-car caravan, heading for Blowing Rock.  The boys decided to stay at home so it was just us adults and Lady V.   Looking out over the mountains was a beautiful sight.   BROTHERS! THE GANG MINUS 2 DAVE & JIN We were all hungry so went into Boone to the local brewery. After lunch we popped back up on the Blue Ridge Parkway and stopped at Moses Cone Memorial Park.  This is the country estate of Moses Cone,…
