VOLCANIC DRAMA FIRE TURNED TO STONE June 25, 2014   Today we decided to check out West Yellowstone at the opposite side of the Park.  We needed to buy a few grocery items things and wanted to see what they had to offer over there, rather than going down to Cody!   Throughout the park, Yellowstone Stores are located, providing everything from clothing, souvenirs and limited selection of groceries.  Milk, dairy, drinks, bread, even some meats and vegetables but all in limited quantities.  For big shopping, better off getting to a grocery store. A lot warmer than…

BACK TO “WORK” June 22, 23 Well, just finished up our two days of work.  It would seem that the majority of the campers here have gotten the message and did not leave anything out. Sunday we had showers sweeping through with some really ugly clouds, rain then hail, then rain, then blue skies, then hail!  Go figure! Weather is getting slowly warmer.  No longer snowing, in the 50’s during the day especially when the sun is out.  When the sun goes behind the clouds, it drops about 10 degrees! We had one site that was beautifully set up for…

WEST THUMB GEYSER Sixth Day Off … Afternoon 6/21/14   So, on our last day off, of our first week of “working”, we jammed it packed with the morning hike at Storm Point and the afternoon stroll around West Thumb Geyser Basin.  Someone thought that Yellowstone Lake looked like a hand and the thumb was where this basin is located.  I’ve looked at the maps, an depending on the map, it could look like a hand or not.  It’s all in the eye of the beholder. We visited this basin when we first arrived and wanted to complete the tour….

STORM POINT TRAIL Sixth Day Off June 21, 2014 2.3 mile loop   INDIAN PONT One of the most scenic hikes in YSNP is Storm Point along Lake Yellowstone.  It starts in the meadow with beautiful Indian  Pond.    This tranquility belies its explosive past. Indian Pond erupted onto the landscape similar to a geyser.  A thermal area was held under pressure         beneath a massive glacier.  As the glacier receded, pressure was released and wallhah a pond                 erupted. INDIAN POINT It…

TODAY’S MISSION: NORRIS GEYSER BASIN Fifth Day Off!!!! June 20, 2014 Finally the sun came out, the air warmed up and I took a hike with only a teeshirt!  What a difference a day makes!!!!! However, before we could get much past Hayden Valley we were already involved in an “animal-jam”. This guy ran across the field to get to the road, only to stop in front of the cars and not move on.  After several minutes, a utility truck came down the middle and honked his horn to get the bison to move.  These animals kick like cows,…

TOWER FALLS Fourth Day Off June 19, 2014 It’s warming up!  Sun is out and temps in the 40’s.  A proverbial heatwave! Dave’s mission of the afternoon was to drive the North Loop through the park.  This is our fourth day off and feels soooo much better than the last three days!  No snow!  That’s a plus.   Just past Fishing Bridge we encountered the usual “animal-jam” while a group of bison stroll along the road moving from one meadow to another.     As we climbed out of the Canyon area, we came to an overlook called:  Heart of…

A SNOW DAY …. IN JUNE 6/18/14 It was 37 degrees this morning around 9AM and snow was all over the place.  Apparently at some point in the night the rain turned to snow and this morning it was laying on the cars, road and trees. After a couple of quick walks with Billy between snow squalls, SNOW SQUALLS Dave started installing the bathroom faucet and I washed a load of laundry. BILLY’S LOGGING ROAD The logging road that Billy loves to walk up, because it is littered with dead limbs…

Bubbles, Bubbles, Toil & Trouble Mud Volcanoes June 16, 2014 (afternoon) This area is eerily intriguing.  It is so alive, changing all the time.  It is absolutely fascinating.  We decided to keep going past our turnoff to Hayden Valley just seven miles from where we are staying. Included in this valley are the Mud Volcano, Mud Geyser, Sulfur Cauldron (stinky) and Black Dragon Caldron along with Sulfur Springs in the crater hills.  Bubbling, steaming, churning within the Yellowstone’s caldera are thousands of mudpots, fumaroles, hot springs and geysers. By the time we got to Mud Volcano the sky was blue…

OUR FIRST DAY OFF IN YELLOWSTONE Oh what to do, what to do! Does life get any better than that!!!! June 16, 2014 First half of day — Old Faithful   Woke up to promising weather.  The sky was bright blue and, although the temps were in the 40’s, in the sun it was very pleasant.  We decided to see what everyone is here to see … Old Faithful.  It is 30 miles from our location. I threw my fleece-lined rain jacket into the back of the car, however did not expect to wear it.  Also brought my heavy sweatshirt…
