A Night’s Sail – May 4 Spanish Wells to North Man Of War Channel, Abacos There are two routes from Spanish Wells to the Abacos. One is the Egg Island Cut about ten miles down the bank and the other route that could be shorter (if you’re successful) is through Ridley Head and the Devil’s Backbone (get the picture?). To do it successfully (without substantial risk), we would need to hire a pilot to take us through or depend on our ability to read the water and the sea-state would be in good condition. The cut is between reefs that…

NASSAU AND SEARCH FOR THE IMPRELLER! April 30th Today we are hunting down a solution to the dinghy motor! Dave was walking through the yellow pages trying to locate various sources for this impeller. He called all the local places in Nassau – the Evinrude dealer said they’d have it in10 days; other places didn’t have it but kept referring him around Nassau. He did call a place in the Abacos and they thought they’d have one by mid-May! Oh joy! Before our hard-target search began, we decided we’d head to Winn Dixie first and get resupplied. The propane tank…

TRYING TO LEAVING WADERICK!  APRIL 28TH Someone finally turned the wind down – it’s now 17-20 kts – just enough to get everyone moving again. During one of our PPDG discussions weather conditions, one of the cruisers complained about having to sit out the winds in various spots when guy walked through and said, “Sometimes you just have to put in a double reef and go”. Well, that’s exactly what we did. Since our motor is kapoot, we decided to head straight up to Nassau to see what we could find. We left Warderick Wells along with just about every…

Warderick Wells N24 23.678 W76 37.943 WADERICK WELLS CAY, Bahamas Apr 22 We lifted anchor at Big Major at 10:15AM heading for Warderick Wells. The weather for the week is going to turn NE to E 20-25 kts so we’ve decided on Warderick Wells as a hidey hole until the winds moderate.  (more…)

BIG MAJOR N24.11.050 W76.27.583 BIG MAJOR CAY, Bahamas THOUGHTS ABOUT BLACK POINT SETTLEMENT Well, we finally pulled anchor and let our “homestead” of Black Point go. It was hard to leave that island and the friends we made while there. We were only there four days including day of arrival and day of departure yet it felt like we’d been there for weeks! We love the lack of pretension on this island. The people on the island are so friendly and they are working very hard to make their settlement an important stop for cruisers on their way down and…

– Staniel Cay N24 10.336 W76 26.755  April 16 Today we decided to leave Cambridge Cay and head south. Our destination was Staniel Cay so we are now outside the Exuma Land & Sea Park. Had a great 2 hour sail down the Cays passing Compass, Pipe Creek, Overyonder Cay, Sampson Cay, Dennis Cay, Fowl Cay and Big Majors Spot, Little Majors Spot to Big Rock Cut and into Staniel Cay. When we first started out down here, the thought…

CAMBRIDGE CAY N24.18.210 W76 32.444 April 13    We left Warderick Wells Cay at 10:15 heading out to Exuma Sound and down to Little Bell Island almost the southern most point of Exuma Land & Sea Park. We picked up a Park Mooring here around 1:00 and settled in for lunch. The sail down Exuma Sound from Warderick was good with 15kt winds – if you don’t count the first 90 minutes of plowing into the waves! Eventually we were able to change our heading a little and put up the main and sail to Little Bell otherwise known as…
